Meet Our CACREP Team Leaders

John Rigney, EdD, NCC, LPCC-S is an experienced counselor educator, consultant and clinician. He has served in counselor education since 1988 with appointments as a faculty member, department chair and dean of the graduate school.

Dr. Rigney began his work in CACREP accreditation in 1994, in a counseling department with 3 faculty. Under his leadership, Dr. Rigney helped develop 27 CACREP counselor education programs that now enroll over 400 graduate students.

Keith Gibson PhD is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. Dr. Gibson has also held leadership roles in research and program evaluation.

Dr. Gibson currently specializes in program evaluation and system analysis - drawing upon his broad base of professional experience as a practicing psychologist in numerous behavioral health settings. Dr. Gibson integrates technology with education. He enjoys helping universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards. Dr. Gibson also works closely with university program coordinators, administrators and faculty to develop program standards and systems that will support CACREP accreditation.

Your Path to CACREP Accreditation is Clear

Each university and graduate program has its own specific concerns, issues and requirements.

We work with faculty coordinators and university programs to help them reach their goal of CACREP accreditation. Our team of CACREP consultants has developed and refined a process to help put all the pieces of the accreditation puzzle together which we call our “PATH” Process.

Our team provides an initial complimentary meeting or video conference to discuss your program’s CACREP accreditation (or re-accreditation) status. Based upon this initial meeting, we work with your program to customize our “PATH” Process so that it meets your program requirements, budget and mutually defined goals.

The CACREP PATH Process - Key Steps

Step 1: Assessment: Program Review and Status Evaluation

During Step 1, our CACREP Accreditation team works with university faculty and program coordinators to assess the status of the graduate program against CACREP standards required for accreditation.

Key areas of evaluation:

  • Professional Practice – including:
    • Supervisor qualifications
    • Practicum and internship course loads
  • Program Evaluation – including:
    • Evaluation of the Program
    • Assessment of students’ professional development
    • Evaluation of faculty and supervisors

Our CACREP team can also facilitate:

  • Helping to inform key constituents and decision makers about the importance and benefits of CACREP accreditation
  • Facilitating constructive dialogue among the faculty and staff

Step 1 concludes with the delivery of a comprehensive report detailing program strengths and work needed to be completed prior to the submission of an Application and Self-Study to CACREP.

Step 2: Program Modification & Development

After the Step 1 Program Evaluation is complete, our CACREP team works with you to develop an appropriate course of action and a detailed plan to address any noted inadequacies within the program. We develop a timeline for deliverables leading up the CACREP self-study application submission.

Step 2 includes the identification of the necessary documentation and systems required for the CACREP self-study application process. If necessary, we also provide strategic recommendations on how to efficiently create and organize the process of creating required CACREP systems and documentation.

Step 3: CACREP Self-Study Development

During Step 3, the self-study application is created for electronic submittal. Our CACREP team provides the technical support and guidance necessary to successfully prepare the CACREP application for submittal. During this step, we work collaboratively with you and your team to monitor and report on the progress achieved.

For some clients, we provide program coordination for the CACREP self-study process and for development of the CACREP self-study application. Other clients choose to manage this process internally with our support.

Prior to submittal, we can also provide an external review of the self-study application to assess its readiness and to proactively identify areas of concern.

Step 4: Mock Site Visit

We'll schedule a visit to campus to conduct a mock site visit, exit interview, and provide initial feedback. We have found this to be an important strategic component in achieving a successful site visit.

Step 5: CACREP Submittal and Response to Initial CACREP Review

At Step 5, the official CACREP application is completed, proper signatures are added (along with a check for the associated application fee). The application and electronic copies of the Self-Study are submitted to the CACREP office.

Upon receipt of the CACREP Staff Review, our team will review this response with your team. We will assist you in developing an action plan to address any areas of concern identified.
